A lo largo de su carrera fue traduciendo una serie de poemas que reflejaban la temática y las preocupaciones intelectuales visibles asimismo en su obra original: Eugenio Montale, Louis Aragon, Günter Kunert, Paul Celan, Edmond Jabès, entre otros. Pero el caso de Hölderlin adquiere una especial relevancia. Primer poeta de juventud en quien se inspira para asumir la Dichterberuf —vocación poética—, fue también el último poeta que tradujo apenas dos años antes de su fallecimiento. Eligió, además, cinco poemas breves para verterlos al gallego, su otra lengua materna. Así, en este ensayo, se expondrá, por un lado, la temprana y continua atención de Valente al poeta suabo, para evidenciar las lecciones asumidas desde esas primeras lecturas que han determinado la manera de asumir el oficio poético en el autor gallego; y, por otro, en qué medida la traducción sirve aquí para rendir homenaje y fundir su palabra con el poeta de sus inicios literarios. | The most significant aspect of José Ángel Valente s work as a translator is his identification with the poet being translated. Throughout his career he translated a series of poems that reflected the subject and intellectual concerns also visible in his original work: Eugenio Montale, Louis Aragon, Günter Kunert, Paul Celan, Edmond Jabès, among others. But the case of Hölderlin is particularly relevant. The first poet of his youth from whom he drew inspiration for his ‘Dichterberuf’ —poetic vocation—, he was also the last poet he translated, just two years before his death. Moreover, he translated into Galician, his other mother tongue, the poems of Hölderlin. Thus, in this essay, on the one hand, will be presented Valente s early and continuous attention to the Swabian poet, in order to show the lessons learned from those first readings that have determined the Galician author s way of assuming the poetic craft; and, on the other, to evidende the extent to which the translation serves here to pay homage and merge his word with the poet of his literary beginnings.
